Hello again,

Its been quite some time since I’ve posted anything about what I’ve been up to. I’ve been busy pulling my hair out over not being able to find work and subsequently a place to live. What I wanted, foolishly as I’ve learned, was to walk right into a new home without having a job so that I could kick back and relax on my savings for a few months before. I came to find this idea assbackwards from the reality of moving. The following is a list of things I’ve learned about moving to a new city:

1. Have a job when you arrive. If not, you better be prepared with an attractive resume. Check out this excellent source for tips on crafting a resume you can be confident will set you apart from the myriad applicants employers have to shovel through each day. I did and it payed off.

2. If you don’t have a job, don’t expect to find a place to live. Most rentals require that you and your roommates make at least 3x the rent, and sometimes you have to qualify individually. That means that each person has to make 3x the rent on their own!

3. Don’t think that having savings and no steady income will land you a month-to-month lease either, because it most likely won’t. I still haven’t quite figured out why this is the case, but it happened to me, and it can happen to you.

4. If you’re staying with friends, be sure to communicate and treat their home and their personal needs with respect. They want to help you, so help them help you and save each other the stress.

5. The most important thing I’ve learned is that sometimes you have to take a step back so you can get a real good look at where you’re headed, whether its taking any job you can get because you’re running out of money, or living wherever you can because all you really need is a warm shower and shelter from the rain, be welcome to compromise and little pleasures. You’re still better off than most people in the world.

In light of all the stress I’ve been experiencing, I finally landed a job at Blue Kangaroo Coffee Roasters. The ladies that run the place started out roasting coffee beans over a burner in their back yard and now roast and serve some of the freshest, tastiest coffee I’ve ever had in their own cafe in Sellwood, a thriving suburb in southeast Portland dripping with that small town feel and set right against the Willamette and the Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge. Now that I’m employed, I feel much more confident that the apartment Derek and I applied for in Sellwood will be ours come Monday.

If any of you decide to move to a new city, please do yourself a favor and consider what I’ve said. Do it for yourself. Do it for your hair.
